Day 1: Depart from Ushuaia
Embark the USHUAIA in the afternoon and meet your expedition and lecture staff. After you have settled into your cabins we sail along the famous Beagle Channel and the scenic Mackinlay Pass.

Day 2 & 3: Crossing the Drake Passage
Named after the renowned explorer, Sir Francis Drake, who sailed these waters in 1578, the Drake Passage also marks the Antarctic Convergence, a biological barrier where cold polar water sinks beneath the warmer northern waters. This creates a great upwelling of nutrients, which sustains the biodiversity of this region. The Drake Passage also marks the northern limit of many Antarctic seabirds. As we sail across the passage, our lecturers will be out with you on deck to help in the identification of an amazing variety of seabirds, including many albatrosses, which follow in our wake. The USHUAIA’s open bridge policy allows you to join our officers on the bridge and learn about navigation, watch for whales, and enjoy the view. A full program of lectures will be offered as well.

The first sightings of icebergs and snow-capped mountains indicate that we have reached the South Shetland Islands, a group of twenty islands and islets first sighted in February 1819 by Capt. William Smith of the brig Williams. With favorable conditions in the Drake Passage our lecturers and naturalists will accompany you ashore as you experience your first encounter with the penguins and seals on Day 3.

Day 4 to 8: Exploring South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula
The South Shetland Islands are a haven for wildlife. Vast penguin rookeries, beaches ruled by Antarctic fur seals and southern elephant seals make every day spent in this amazing island group unforgettable. Sailing through the narrow passage into the flooded caldera of Deception Island is truly amazing. King George Island, the largest of the South Shetland Islands, features colonies of nesting Adélie and Chinstrap Penguins, Kelp Gulls, Blue-eyed Cormorants, Antarctic Terns and Southern Giant Petrels and is home to scientific bases of many different countries. Macaroni, Chinstrap and Gentoo Penguins as well as elephant seals await you at Livingston Island.
The Antarctic Peninsula’s remarkable history will provide you with a type of excitement often only associated with the early explorers. You will have plenty of time to explore its amazing scenery, a pristine wilderness of snow, ice, mountains and waterways, and an incredible wide variety of wildlife. Apart from penguins and seabirds you are very likely to see Weddell, crabeater and leopard seals as well as Minke, killer (orca) and humpback whales at close range.
We hope to navigate some of the most beautiful waterways (depending on the ice conditions): the Gerlache Strait, the Neumayer Channel, and the Lemaire Channel, the latter are narrow passages between towering rock faces and spectacular glaciers. We plan to make at least two landings per day. Possible landing sites may include: Paradise Bay is perhaps the most aptly named place in the world and we attempt a landing on the continent proper. After negotiating the iceberg-strewn waters of the Antarctic Sound, we hope to visit the bustling Adélie Penguin (over 100,000 pairs breed here) and Blue-eyed Cormorant colonies on Paulet Island. The Nordenskjöld expedition built a stone survival hut here in 1903. Today its ruins have been taken over by nesting penguins.
Further exploration may take you to Melchior Island, Cuverville Island, Portal Point, Neko Harbour, Pléneau Island and if ice conditions permit, to Petermann Island for a visit to the southernmost colony of Gentoo Penguins.

Day 9 & 10: At Sea crossing the Drake Passage, northbound
We leave Antarctica and head north across the Drake Passage. Join our lecturers and naturalists on deck as we search for seabirds and whales and enjoy some final lectures. Take the chance to relax and reflect on the fascinating adventures of the past days on the way back to Ushuaia.

Day 11: Arrival at Ushuaia
We arrive at Ushuaia in the early morning and disembark the USHUAIA after breakfast.

From the world-famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema to the tops of scenic outlooks of Corcovado and Pão de Açúcar to the dance halls, bars and open-air cafes that proliferate the city, cariocas live for the moment without a care in the world. This idea of paradise has enchanted visitors for centuries, and there are dozens of ways to be seduced. You can surf great breaks off Prainha, hike through Tijuca’s rainforests, sail across Guanabára, dance the night away in Lapa or just people-watch on Ipanema Beach.
Fortunately in Rio there’s much more beyond the glitter: historic neighborhoods, compelling architecture, wildlife and nature, dining nightspots, cafes, museums, and enclaves of rich and poor. In Rio, the more you explore, the more there is.
A city of some seven million and growing, Rio remains one ofBrazil’s media capitals, an important business center, andBrazil’s key tourist destination.

Top Attractions:
Corcovado Hill – Christ the Redeemer
The Christ of Corcovado was recently chosen as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. The view from the toes of Rio’s mountain top Christ is spectacular: the mountains, the bay, and the city all lay revealed beneath your feet. It’s enough to give you a feeling of omniscience. The statue was intended to mark the 100th anniversary of Brazilian independence in 1922, but in true Carioca fashion it arrived a decade or so late in 1931. Access is via a steep narrow-gauge railway, followed by a pair of escalators that whisk you up to the base of the statue. Allow 2 hours round-trip.

Sugarloaf
Along with samba, beaches, and beautiful women, the Sugarloaf remains one of the original and enduringRio attractions. Deservedly so. Standing on its peak, the entire cidade maravilhosa lays at your feet: the beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana, the favelas of Babylonia, the Tijuca Forest, Christ the Redeemer on His mountain, the Bay of Guanabara, and the fortresses at the edge of far-off Niterói. It’s a truly beautiful sight. The cable car leaves every half-hour from 8am to 10pm daily, more frequently if there are enough people waiting.

Buenos Aires has always been famous for its incredible cultural offer.
Cinemas, theatres and shows provide an unlimited variety of options for entertainment. Like every big city, Buenos Aires has a thriving theater scene. The ‘Broadway’ of Buenos Aires is the section of Avenida Corrientes that’s between Avenida 9 de Julio and Callao. Most of the city’s 40-odd theaters are located here. Dramas, musical comedies, “teatro de revistas” (a sort of revue), and tango shows, are some of the proposals for all ages, all year round.
Both cinema and theatre represent two very important activities for the porteños. Currently, there are about 175 theatres, 200 cinemas and many Tango Shows.
Tango has been exported to the world, but many enthusiasts in other countries move mountains to come here, to the acknowledged beating heart of tango, to learn from the masters!

The city of Buenos Aires holds more than 3,500 restaurants, ranging from the most sophisticated traditional and ethnic restaurants to bars, pubs and international chains of fast food restaurants.

The classical parrillas offering Argentine roasted meat abound, even in the sidewalks. Buenos Aires is just the place to taste all kinds of meals from different countries of the world. Corrientes avenue is the ideal place to taste an excellent pizza. Dining in Buenos Aires is an art, a passion, and a pastime. Sobremesa (chatting over wine or coffee long after the table has been cleared) is as much of an event as the meal itself.

Estancias, or ranches, play a huge part in Argentina’s culture and economy. In the early days these establishments were responsible for making Argentina one of the biggest meat and grain producers in world. Dotted around the vast, flat pampa we find delightful old estancias, which continue to retain their colonial elegance and charm. Perfectly juxtaposed with the cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, the estancias offer a chance to step back in time and imagine life as it was generations ago. Here one can relax, ride, watch the gauchos at work and enjoy an authentic – unbeatable Argentinian barbecue.
Estancias also give tourists the rare opportunity to stay as a guest at a working estancia in order to experience the unique gaucho ranch culture in a tranquil and beautiful setting of untamed countryside. Most estancias are over two hundred years old and still maintain traditional practices and values.

Buenos Aires is a city characterized by the multiplicity of its artistic expressions, ranging from the great assortment of sculptures and monuments to streets and corners that surprise the visitor with their allegorical reliefs and murals.

The classical buildings in Buenos Aires are a mix of architectural styles (particularly French and Italian), as you would expect in a city of immigrants. Many of them were built during the boom years of 1880 to 1920, which means that many of them are built in the neoclassical style that was popular around the world at that time..

Of course the architecture in Buenos Aires isn’t all classical. There are art nouveau and art deco buildings too, dilapidated colonial houses in San Telmo, colorful shacks around La Boca’s Caminito and gleaming towers in Puerto Madero. They’re all part of the mix.

Buenos Aires has a flourishing book industry, one of the most competitive in Latin America, owing to the amount of books published every year as well as to the quality of the publications. That is why Buenos Aires is one of the cities concentrating more bookstores. Often referred to as ciudad de libros (city of books), Buenos Aires has a rich literary history and culture that inspires residents and visitors alike to explore the shelves of its charming bookstores.

For those who admire or collect pieces of art there are wonderful galleries and art museums where works by Argentine and foreign artists may be admired. There is a great variety of museums. At present, there are more than 100 museums, both public and private.

The Spanish word “torre” means “tower,” an appropriate name for the trio of soaring granite pinnacles that form the centerpiece of Torres del Paine National Park in remote southern Chile. In Torres del Paine, mountains rise from the windswept Patagonian plains, creating some of the most dramatic scenery on earth. Majestic peaks, including the jagged Cuernos del Paine (Horns of Paine) and Paine Grande, the park’s highest point at 10,006 feet, loom over a wild landscape of glaciers, rushing rivers, and turquoise lakes. From the population centers of central and northern Chile, this isolated region is reachable only by air, sea, or road through Argentina.
Chile’s Torres del Paine trek is the “classic” Patagonian trek offering towering granite peaks, valleys surrounded by 360 degree panoramas of mountains, glacial views stretching to the horizon, incredible fields of wild flowers, and much more. With short options to day hikes.

In 2011, Peru celebrates 100 years since Hiram Bingham discovered the forgotten citadel of Machu Picchu. One of the world’s most spectacular treks, spellbinding mountain scenery and unforgettable Inca sites.

Machu Picchu: The Lost City of the Inkas

Machu Picchu quechua name that means “Old Mountain”. It is an Inca city build approximately between the years 1400 to 1500 by the Inca Pachacutec. It is considered as one of the most important architectonic and archeological jewels of the Incas.

Machu Picchu is located at the top of the mountain that give rise to its name, 130 kilometers at the northeast of Cusco at 2,200 meters of altitude, in the Urubamba valley. It is located at three hours journey by train from the city of Cusco, or walking four days by the Inca road.

What was Machu Picchu?

It still continues being a non solved unknown factor, an aureole of mystery shrouded everything related to this city. There are many theories about the function of Machu Picchu, there are investigators that postulate that it was eminently a ceremonial center and of sacerdotal education. Other group thinks that was mainly a resort place, game preserve and observatory of the Inca and its royal retinue; however the most accepted theory sustains that it was a settlement build with the objective of supervising the economy of the conquest regions and with the secret purpose to refuge the Inca and its closest retinue in case of attack.

In the year 1983 Machu Picchu was declared “Cultural Heritage of the Human Race” by the UNESCO, it is the most visited tourist destiny of Peru and one of the most important archeological centers of South America.

Machu Picchu bears, with Cuzco and the other archaeological sites of the valley of the Urubamba (Ollantautaybo, Runcuracay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupamarca, Huiñay Huayna, Intipucu, etc.) a unique testimony to the Inca civilization. Cuzco and the old villages still retain traces of land occupation from the Inca Empire to preserve, in a more global manner, an archaeological heritage which has become susceptible to the effects of urbanization. Furthermore, Macchu Picchu is an outstanding example of man’s interaction with his natural environment.

Standing 2,430 m above sea level, in the midst of a tropical mountain forest in an extraordinarily beautiful setting, Machu Picchu was probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at its height. Its giant walls, terraces and ramps seem as if they have been cut naturally in the continuous rock escarpments. The natural setting, on the eastern slopes of the Andes, encompasses the upper Amazon basin with its rich diversity of flora and fauna.

Machu Picchu covers 32,500 ha in some of the scenically most attractive mountainous territory of the Peruvian Andes. As the last stronghold of the Incas and of superb architectural and archaeological importance, Machu Picchu is one of the most important cultural sites in Latin America; the stonework of the site remains as one of the world’s great examples of the use of a natural raw material to provide outstanding architecture which is totally appropriate to the surroundings. The surrounding valleys have been cultivated continuously for well over 1,000 years, providing one of the world’s greatest examples of a productive man-land relationship; the people living around Machu Picchu continue a way of life which closely resembles that of their Inca ancestors, being based on potatoes, maize and llamas. Machu Picchu also provides a secure habitat for several endangered species, notably the spectacled bear, one of the most interesting species in the area. Others animals include: dwarf brocket, the otter, long-tailed weasel, pampas cat and the vulnerable ocelot, boa, the Andean cock of the rock, and the Andean condor.

The natural vegetation is of humid and very humid lower montane forest of the subtropical region, mainly with genera and ferns of the Cyathea and palms.

Set on the vertiginous site of a granite mountain sculpted by erosion and dominating a meander in the Rio Urubamba, Machu Picchu is a world renowned archaeological site. The construction of this amazing city, set out according to a very rigorous plan, comprises one of the most spectacular creations of the Inca Empire. It appears to date from the period of the two great Incas, Pachacutec Inca Yupanqui (1438-71) and Tupac Inca Yupanqui (1472-93). The function of this city situated at least 100 km from the capital, Cuzco, has not been formulated which are not verifiable given the absence of written documentation and sufficiently explicit material evidence.

Without making a judgement as to their purpose, several quite individual quarters may be noted in the ruins of Machu Picchu: a quarter ‘of the Farmers’ near the colossal terraces whose slopes were cultivated and transformed into hanging gardens; an ‘industrial’ quarter; a ‘royal’ quarter and a ‘religious’ quarter. Inca architecture reveals itself here in all of its force with the titanic earthen works which multiplied the platforms, levelled the rocky relief, constructed ramps and stairways and literally sculpted the mountain whose cyclopean constructions appear to be a prolongation of nature.

2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the rediscovery of Machu Picchu by North American Explorer Hiram Bingham. To celebrate this momentous occasion we are offering an exciting range of luxury Peru tours all featuring a journey to Cusco, the Sacred Valley and the famed lost citadel of Machu Picchu.

In the heart of the Southern Patagonian Andes -at the foot of the mitic Fitz Roy Mountain- lies El Chaltén, a small touristic town founded on the extreme North of Los Glaciares National Park.
Behind the colossal granite walls dominating the view is the famous “Campo de Hielo Patagonico Sur’, the most important continental ice mass of our planet after Antartica. Glaciers descend from these eternal Ice Fields, feeding the great lakes of this area. One of them is the famous Perito Moreno Glacier in the extreme South of Los Glaciares National Park.

Puerto Madryn is the major tourist resort in the Patagonian coast and it is, as well, the entrance gate to theValdésPeninsula, where one of the most colossal and worldwide admired show is presented: southern right whale watching. Colonized by Welsh immigrants in 1865, is the gateway to theValdesPeninsula and Punta Tombo, as well as a popular beach resort.

Excursions from Puerto Madryn:

Full Day Excursion to Peninsula Valdes

Península Valdés in the Argentinean province of Chubut is a 4,000 km2 promontory, protruding 100 km eastwards into the South Atlantic. The 400 km shoreline includes a series of gulfs, rocky cliffs, shallow bays and lagoons with extensive mudflats, sandy and pebble beaches, coastal sand dunes and small islands.

The shores and waters around thePeninsula is a special place for marine mammals. A population of southern right whales uses the protected waters for mating and calving. The southern elephant seal has its most northern colony here. It reaches peak numbers of over 1,000 individuals and is the only colony in the world reported to be on the increase. The southern sea lion also breeds here in large numbers.

The local population of orcas has used the beaches of Valdés to develop a unique and spectacular approach to hunting. The orcas race into the shallow surf to snatch sea lions or young elephant seals, often throwing themselves onto the beach in the process.

The site has a high diversity of birds. The peninsula’s intertidal mudflats and coastal lagoons are important staging sites for migratory shorebirds The Magellanic penguin is the most numerous with almost 40,000 active nests distributed among five different colonies.

Terrestrial mammals are also abundant. Large herds of guanaco can be seen throughout the peninsula and the mara, an Argentinean endemic, which is endangered in other parts of the country, is found here. The primary attraction here is Peninsula Valdes, one of the most important wildlife reserves inArgentina. It is the breeding ground for sea lions, sea elephants, and Southern Right whales (May – December), as well as a sanctuary for many species of marine birds. You will cover approximately 221 milestouring the peninsula. The excursion includes a visit to Puerto Piramides, a small town surrounded by cliffs resembling pyramids, located on NuevoGulf. Here you will take the whale watching excursion by boat (available from May to December)

Continue to the shores of the San Matías Gulf, inside the Punta Norte area in theValdésPeninsula, the San Lorenzo estancia shelters a reproduction colony of Magellanic penguins. Pride of the San Lorenzo estancia, this is a reproduction colony and shelters an average of approximately 200,000 specimens. As in every season, the penguins start to turn up in August and leave in March. They comply with most of their life cycle in this place. The males form the nest and look for their mating partners. Then, the eggs are laid and, at the moment of our visit, they take turns to sit on them until their offspring are born. Both parents are in charge of feeding the young, which then form nurseries and change their feathers until they are ready to get into the sea.

Delicious grilled lamb will be served for lunch, followed by a visit to Punta Norte Colony. Punta Norte is at the extreme north western tip of Península Valdés it is a magnificent setting of cliffs, a worthy backdrop scenario for the walrus and sea lion colonies on the shore. This Provincial Fauna Reserve was created to protect walruses. Occasionally you can see one of them from the observation deck, or further south, with the aid of binoculars.

Facing the observation deck there is an important mating area for sea lions. This colony, together with those facing the lighthouse and onMedinabay, totals some 3,000 adults and an average of 1,350 pups in the breeding season.

Finally before returning to Puerto Madryn you will see the most unusual sight known as Caleta Valdés, or Valdés Creek. It is a long, thin strip of land—basically an overgrown sandbar—running parallel to the coast. At the far end, about 30km (20 miles) north, this strip of silt is connected to the peninsula. Here, at the southern end, is the only inlet to the so-called creek—a channel about 150m (500 feet) wide. Less than 10 years ago, the channel was 600m (2000 feet) wide. This geological feature, known as a coastal cord, tends to trap a bit of sediment every time the tide goes out. For the past couple of years, observers have predicted that it will close up entirely “any day now.” Unless another outlet forms—which seems unlikely—Caleta Valdés will soon change from a creek to a salt lake. And given the shallowness of that lake and the area’s extremely low humidity, it could dry out completely in several more years.

Caleta Valdés is thus the only spot on the continent where the coastline is growing; everywhere else it’s either being eroded slowly away or receding due to rising ocean levels. It’s almost as though this little strip of land is thumbing its nose at continental drift, growing out toward the east as the whole continent slips slowly westward.

Excursion to Punta Tombo Penguin Colony

You set out early for the penguin colony at the Punta Tombo Provincial reserve. After a two-and-a-half hour journey watching the Patagonian steppe, you will get to this limitless penguin colony:200 hectaresof clay and sand that house thousands of nests where the penguins lay their eggs and raise their chicks.

You will walk around the paths among the penguins for about an hour and a half to watch their behaviour. The reserve has a park keeper and also offers sanitary and cafeteria facilities to the visitor. Later on the tour, you will visit Gaiman, where a group of Welsh people settled down in the past. The tour guide will explain the events that took place during the settlement while historical interest points as well as the building style of the village are observed.

An optional stop at a typical tea-house to enjoy a traditional Welsh tea service is offered.

You continue your way to Trelew with its main attraction: the Modern Egidio Feruglio Paleontologic Museum.
Return to Puerto Madryn at sunset.

Bariloche
Located in Argentina Patagonia this small city is well known for its architectural beauty – resembles a Swiss village with its wooden facades – and for its privileged location, a region surrounded by landscape of hills, evergreen forests, snowcapped peaks, lakes, glaciers and exuberant flora.
The city extends over several miles on the shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake. The Bustillo Avenue runs along these miles and reaches the Peninsula, where the imposing Llao Llao Hotel is located, and also Puerto Pañuelos, departing point from excursions to Victoria Island and other charming places of the Nahuel Huapi Lake.

Crossing of the Lakes or Lake Crossing
This is an excursion not to be missed and the best part is that it is available all year round.
The starting point is Puerto Frías, located at one of the ends of the lake of the same name. All customs proceedings are carried out there in order to cross to the neighboring country. The vegetation becomes lush, typical of the Valdivian rainforest. This environment, very similar to the subtropical sceneries, has a high rainfall regime encouraging the development of great tree groves such as larches, cypress, oaks and cinnamon trees, to name but a few.
After sailing for nearly 4 kilometers, you will reach the border through the Pérez Rosales Pass. The first Chilean district is Peulla, located 28 kilometers from this pass.

The way is impressive by the leafy evergreen vegetation with wild colorful flowers and giant trees sometimes hiding the sky and not allowing sunshine to come through; it is a real forest worth to know it. Peulla is a small settlement with a little more than 800 inhabitants which, as well as a customs post, offers hotels and restaurant services.

Very close to this district lies Peulla Port, where the lake circuit is resumed, and this time towards Lake Todos los Santos or Lake Esmeralda.
Here again you will be surprised by the exuberant vegetation of its coasts and the green emerald color of its waters, the presence of the Puntiagudo Volcano of 2493 ms with their snowcapped peaks, the Mount Techado, the Margarita Island and the snows of the hills surrounding the lake. At the end of the tour, 2,652-meter-high Osorno Vocano may also be made out.
Petrohué is the arrival port of the excursion and the seat for the administrative venue of the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park. From there you will start the Petrohué River falls tour, a great attraction place due to the wonderful seven water falls of the River emptying into the Todos los Santos Lake.
A few kilometers away from the Petrohué falls, stands Ensenada, a small district resting on the slopes of the Osorno Volcano which offers lodges, restaurants and several sport activities. From here you will continue by the asphalted route and with a landscape of great beauty, you will arrive at Lago Llanquihue. At your right, you will enjoy the green fields, typical wood constructions and agricultural-cattle establishments, in these astonished 64 km to the city of Puerto Varas. The beaches surrounded by the vegetation of this area complete the beautiful panoramic sight on the other side of the mountain range.

San Martín de los Andes – Road of the Seven Lakes
This full day excursion leaves Bariloche northwards along National Route 237, for 21 km until you meet secondary route F. This is a winding road, with natural beauty all around. You go past Manzano Port and arrive in Villa La Angostura. Once you left the village behind, you will be on the Seven Lakes Road: these lakes are: Correntoso, Espejo, Villarino, Falkner, Hermoso, Machónico, and Meliquina. Finally, you arrive in San Martín de los Andes on the shores of Lácar Lake. The return trip to Bariloche can be through Paso Córdoba or along National Route 40 via Junín de los Andes and La Rinconada.
